Digital Modulation PDF Print

A mode of communications where voice is converted into a stream of digital information and sent via radio.

Advantages:

  • Communication is possible at a signal strength where analog signals would be unreadable.
  • Digital encryption is easier, as the "voice" is already in a digital data stream.
  • Audio quality is generally considered superior.  There is no "analog noise" (static, hiss, etc)

Disadvantages:

  • Equipment is more complex and expensive.
  • There is a slight "digital delay" and the voice is encoded into a digital stream at the transmitter, and decoded from the digital stream at the receiver. This is a very short delay (approximately 0.25 seconds).
