A radio topography that transmits from one radio user directly to another. Dispatchers generally use a high power radio with the antenna on a tall tower or building to communicate with users in the field.

Advantages:

  1. No infrastructure is needed to communicate.
  2. No system delays.

Disadvantages:

  1. Limited range. Users on hand held radios can expect to only communicate with users who are nearby. Users on mobile radios can talk for several miles. The distance users on either hand held or mobile radios varies depending on many factors including geographical topography, building attenuation, transmitter power of the radio, antenna on the radio.
  2. The potential for doubling is increased if several users (who may not be able to hear each other) attempt to contact their dispatcher at the same time.
